The rapid flow of sodium ions can alter the polarity of the membrane and consequently they stop functioning. The potassium channels after that are activated and then there's an outward flowing potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns to its resting condition. A transient negative shift , also known as refractory interval prevents further movement of the action potential. Animal cells are all electrically polarized because they keep the difference in voltage known as membrane potential. For neurons, axonsand dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most exuberant part of an individual neuron is the hillock. However, axons and cells body too can be stimulated. In the axon hillock, the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mV. Synaptic signals to the neuron trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potential is created when enough depolarization occurs and that membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels which are located within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is in fact a collection consisting of proteins that stay inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce action potential because it can generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for controlling the state of ion channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process continues at its fullest. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Several types of ion channels are known that produce positive feedback mechanisms and create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in generation of faster possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse communication.
