A process called an action potential happens that occurs when the membrane potential in a cell is first increased but then decreases. This is a characteristic trait of a variety of human cells, which include muscles cells, neurons and Endocrine cells. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a very crucial part in cell-to cell communication. In beta cells of pancreas action potential is associated with an insulin release. Plasma membranes have a specific type in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for producing action potential. These channels are shut as long as the potential of the membrane is within an equilibrium potential for the cell . However, when the membrane potential rises it becomes active. As the channels become open, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions, which boosts the membrane potential. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions can alter the polarity of the membrane which causes them to are inactive. The potassium channels, after which, become activated and the flow outward of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns to its neutral state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory duration prevents the reverse travel of the action potential. In the cells of animals, generally two types of these potentials are understood, one is generated from voltage-gated potassium channels, and one that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

A majority of cells experience the same voltage between their external and internal environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority of cells few voltage fluctuations are believed to happen, but in a few cells this is a typical feature. Certain cells can also exhibit up and down cycles as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is performed in less than a thousandth of a second while in other cells, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical ability of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep an electric charge that is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, dendrites, axons as well as the cell body have various electrical properties. Different types of ion channels are recognized that create positive feedback cycles , which eventually create these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the creation of more powerful possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels involved in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
