A process called an action potential happens in which the membrane voltage of a cell first increases but then decreases. It is a characteristic feature to a variety of animal cells namely, muscle cells, neuron cells, and endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce them. Neurons play an essential role in cell-to-cell communication. In beta cells of pancreas the action potential is associated with in the production of insulin. Plasma membranes have a specific type of ion channels that are voltage-gated for creating action potential. The channels remain closed while the membrane's current potential close to the potential at rest of the cell but if the membrane potential increases it opens the channels. When they are opened, they permit the inward flow of sodium ions that boost its membrane potential. The rapid inward flow sodium ions affects the polarity of the membrane and as a result they are inactive. The potassium channels, after which, become active and that is followed by an outward flow potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned back to its normal state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory period prevents back travel of the action potential. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these potentials are recognized, for instance, one is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain in a voltage differential between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority of cells, no voltage fluctuations are known to occur however in some cells this can be a normal characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit oscillations between up and down when the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these potentials vary over a wide range. In brain cells the up and down sequence of action potentials are performed in less than a thousandth of a second. In other cells, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical property of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized , as they sustain the same voltage, also known as membrane potential. For cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical characteristics. The most excitable part of one's neuron's axon hillock, however the axon as well as the cell body too are excited. At the axon , the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold potential is 55 mgV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization happens and the membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Numerous types of ion-channels are recognized that create positive feedback loops and eventually create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials similar to nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced in muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to faster nerve impulse conduction.
