Action potential refers to an event in which the membrane voltage of a living cell first increases before decreasing. It is the characteristic property that is present in a wide variety of animals, including muscle cells, neuron cells, and hormone-producing cells. Some plant cells also make them. Neurons play a very crucial function in cell-to-cell communication. Pancreas beta cells have beta cells. action potentials are linked with an insulin release. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of voltage-gated ion channel for creating action potential. They remain closed while the membrane's current potential close to it's resting value of the cell . However when the membrane's potential is increased it opens the channels. When the channels become active, they permit an inward flow sodium ions, which boosts cell membrane power. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they become inactive. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and the flow outward potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns back to its normal state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory interval prevents further forward motion of an action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these potentials can be identified, for instance, one which is produced from voltage-gated potassium channels, and the second one that is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells exhibit in a voltage differential between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. Most cells have few voltage fluctuations are believed to happen, but in a few cells this is a regular characteristic. Some cells also show up and down cycles as the voltage rises and falls. The time between these potentials vary over a wide range. In brain cells the down and up phase of an action potential are complete in less than the thousandth of a second. In other cells, these cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical capacity of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized , as they sustain the same voltage, also called membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical properties. The most active part of an individual neuron is the hillock but axon and cell body too are excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold potential is 55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane's potential exceeds an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels found within the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a group made of proteins. They remain in the plasma and produce movement potential because it is able to result in an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in controlling the level of ion channels. Action potential is generated by the positive feedback cycle that takes place at full intensity. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Several types of ion channels have been identified which generate positive feedback processes that cause the creation of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in generation of faster possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
