Action potential is an event that causes the membrane potential in a cell is first increased but then decreases. It is a characteristic property that is present in a wide variety of animals, including muscles, neurons, and endocrinological cells. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. Beta cells of the pancreas actions potential is associated with releases of insulin. Plasma membranes contain a distinct type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for creating action potential. The channels remain closed even when their membrane potential is close to what is the limit of the cell . However when the membrane's potential increases then the channels open. As the channels become open, they permit the inward flow of sodium ions. This in turn increases the potential of membranes. The rapid inward flow sodium ions causes a change in the polarity of the membrane and they disappear. Following this, potassium channels become active and the flow outward of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its neutral state. The transient negative change known as refractory interval prevents further running of the action kinetic. In animal cells , two varieties of these possibles are understood, one which is triggered via voltage-gated channels, the other is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells have some degree of voltage variation between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. In most cells, tiny voltage fluctuations are observed for their existence, but in some cells, this is a standard feature. Cells can show the cycle of up and down as the voltage fluctuates. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the up and down cycles of action potentials are complete in less than the thousandth of a second. However, in different types of cells, the actions can last for a long time. The electrical ability of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized due to an electric voltage which is called membrane potential. For neurons, axonsand dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical characteristics. The most exuberant part of neuron is called the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body are also excited. At the axon , the resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 millivolts. Neuronal synaptic interactions cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potential is created when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the result of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels that reside in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a group composed of proteins that remain in plasma membrane and produces motion potential because it can generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for maintaining the state of the these channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that occurs at full strength. The time and the intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. A variety of Ion Channels are recognized that create positive feedback mechanisms and cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the creation of more powerful potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in the muscles are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels that are involved in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
