A process called an action potential happens in which the membrane voltage of a cell initially increases and then decreases. This is a characteristic trait and characteristic of a lot of animal cells , namely muscle cells, neurons, and the endocrine cells. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play a vital role in cell-tocell communication. In pancreas beta cells, the action potential is associated with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane has a particular type of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for creating action potential. The channels are closed when the membrane potential is close to it's resting value of the cell . However when the membrane potential rises then the channels open. When they are opened, they let inward flow sodium ions that increase the membrane potential. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and in turn, they disappear. After that potassium channels become activated and there is an outward flow of potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned back to its original position. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory time prevents the back travel of the action potential. In the animal cell, generally two types of these potentials exist, known for example, one is generated by the voltage-gated calcium channels, while the other occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells exhibit in a voltage differential between their internal and external environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority cells, minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed to occur but in some cells this can be a normal characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit oscillations between up and down when the voltage increases and declines. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells, the up and down cycle of action potential are completed in less than thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized since they have a voltage variation called membrane potential. In case of neurons, dendrites, axons and cells have distinct electrical characteristics. The most excitable part of an neuron is its axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body too can be stimulated. At the axon hillock the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold potential is -55 millivolts. The synaptic inputs to the neurons result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane potential crosses an upper limit.

Action potential is the result on the activities of voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins , which are encased in plasma membranes and generates motion potential because it can trigger the positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible managing the state of ion channels. The action potential is created whenever the positive feedback continues at its fullest. The frequency and duration are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Ion channels of various types are identified that generate positive feedback mechanisms and create these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the creation of fast potentials , similar to those that result from nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most rigorously researched voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channel that participate in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
