In the cells of animals, generally two kinds of these potentials are identified, for instance, one that is caused due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Numerous types of ion-channels are known to produce positive feedback processes that cause the creation of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials , similar to those that result from nerve impulses. They are slower than those that occur in muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
