Action potential is an event where the potential for the membrane of a cell initially increases but then decreases. It is a common characteristic of a number of animal cells , including muscles, neurons, and the endocrine cell. Plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an extremely important part in cell-to cell communication. In beta cells of pancreas action potentials are linked with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of ion channels that are voltage-gated for creating action potential. These channels remain closed whenever the membrane's potential remains within the resting potential of the cell , but when the membrane potential rises the channels then they open. If the channels are open, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions, which increase the membrane potential. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions affects the polarity of the membrane which causes them to turn off. After this, potassium channels get active and there is an outward flow potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns to its neutral state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory period prevents back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these potentials can be described, for instance, one through voltage-gated sodium channels, and one that is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show the voltage of their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority of cells tiny voltage fluctuations are observed as occurring, however in certain cells this is an expected characteristic. Cells can show variations in the voltage, as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these voltages differ across a broad range. In brain cells, the up and down cycle of action potential are complete in less than the thousandth of a second. In other types of cells , cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electro-polarized. They keep an electric voltage which is called membrane potential. In case of neuronal cells, axons and cell body have different electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in one's neuron's axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body can also be stimulated. In the axon hillock, the resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold is -55 millivolts. Synaptic signals to the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane's potential exceeds the threshold.

Action potential is the result from the voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is in fact a collection composed of proteins that remain in plasma membrane and produces actions potential due to the fact that it could result in positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for control of the activity of these channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle occurs at full strength. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Many kinds of ionchannels have been discovered that cause positive feedback mechanisms and produce these potentials. These sodium channels are involved with the creation of higher possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced by muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels which are involved in faster nerve impulse communication.
