A process called an action potential happens that occurs when the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases before decreasing. It is the characteristic property for a range of animal cells , including muscle cells, neuron cells, and hormone-producing cells. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a very crucial function in cell-to-cell communication. Beta cells of the pancreas action potentials are connected to an insulin release. Plasma membranes have a specific type of voltage-gated Ion channels producing action potential. The channels are closed even when their membrane potential is within an equilibrium potential for the cell but If the membrane's current potential rises it opens the channels. When the channels become active, they let inward flow sodium ions. This can increase cell membrane power. The rapid inward flow sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and , in the process, become inactive. The potassium channels then become activated and it is a flow of potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns to its resting state. A transient positive shift known as refractory periods prevents back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells generally , two types of these potentials are understood, one which is triggered by the voltage-gated calcium channels and another one that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells have the same voltage between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority of cells small voltage fluctuations are reported for their existence, but in some cells this is an expected characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit the cycle of up and down as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is completed in less than thousandth of a second. In other cells, these actions can last for a long time. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain the difference in voltage called membrane potential. In case of neuronal cells, axons and cell body have different electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in neurons is the axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body can also be excited. At the axon hillock the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 millivolts. Synaptic messages to the brain result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. It is produced when enough depolarization happens and the membrane voltage reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels within the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel actually a group of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It produces action potential because it can give rise to the positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the level of these channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle goes on at full-speed. The duration as well as the magnitude are determined by the biophysical properties associated with the voltage-gated ion channel. Ion channels of various types are available that are believed to generate positive feedback cycles and ultimately create these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the creation of fast impulses like nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in the muscle cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
