An action potential occurs during which the membrane power of a particular cell increases before decreasing. Plasma membranes feature a unique type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for producing action potential. The channels remain closed at times when membrane potential is within those of the cell . However, when the membrane's voltage increases then the channels become active. Once the channels are open, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions that boost the cell's membrane potency. The fast inward flow of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they stop functioning. The potassium channels, after which, become active and that is followed by an outward flow of the potassium ions due to which the membrane returns back to its original position. The transient negative change known as refractory time prevents the back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these potentials can be understood, one of which is because of voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells maintain the voltage of their outside and indoor environment. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. The majority of cells show tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to happen, but in a few cells, this is a standard characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit oscillations between up and down when the voltage changes. The duration of these potentials differ across a broad range. These proteins produce movement potential because it is able to create a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in setting the parameters of ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle occurs at full strength. The duration and intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Several types of ion channels have been discovered that cause positive feedback and cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found by muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
