A process called an action potential happens where the membrane potential of a living cell first increases and then decreases. It is the characteristic property of several animal cells namely, neurons, muscle cells and Endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play a vital role in cell-tocell communications. In the beta pancreas cells action potential is associated with an insulin release. Plasma membranes comprise a particular kind of voltage-gated channels for producing action potential. They remain closed when the membrane potential is close to that of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential increases it opens the channels. When the channels open they allow for an inward flow sodium ions that increase cell membrane power. The rapid flow of sodium ions alters the membrane's polarity and , as a consequence, they turn off. Following that, potassium channels are activated and they are able to flow outward of potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns back to its original position. A transient positive shift known as refractory periods prevents back running of the action kinetic. In the animal cell, generally two types of these potentials exist, identified, for instance, one is generated by the voltage-gated calcium channels, and another that is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells keep an electrical difference between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70mV. In majority of cells very tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to happen, but in a few cells this is an expected characteristic. Some cells also show an up-and-down cycle as the voltage goes up and down. The duration of these voltages vary over a wide range. In brain cells, the up and down sequence of action potentials are completed in less than thousandth of a second. In other cell types, the cycles can take up to a few seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to the same voltage, also called membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most exuberant part of an neuron is its axon hillock but axon and cell body are also excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold is at -55 mV. Synaptic signals to the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization occurs and that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results in the function of voltage-gated channels that are found in the plasma membranes of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is actually a cluster of proteins that remains embedded in the plasma membrane. It produces an action potential in order to produce a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in maintaining the state of the these channels. Action potential is generated as the feedback loop runs at full speed. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. Several types of ion channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback mechanisms and create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of larger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
