Action potential refers to an event during which the membrane power of a particular cell increases then decreases. It is the characteristic property for a range of human cells, which include muscle cells, neural cells, and cell types that are endocrine. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a significant role in cell-tocell communication. Pancreas beta cells have beta cells. action potential is linked to it being released by insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of voltage-gated ion channel for creating action potential. These channels remain closed when the membrane potential is within the resting potential of the cell . However if the membrane potential increases and the channels begin to open, they become active. When the channels open they allow the flow of sodium ions. This can increase the potential of membranes. The fast inward flow of sodium ions alters the membrane's polarity and as a result they disappear. The potassium channels after that are activated and there is an outward flow of potassium ions , causing the membrane returns to its resting state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory periods prevents back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells generally two types of potentials are identified, for instance, one that is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is the voltage of their internal and external environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In majority of cells very low voltage variations are thought to occur however in some cells this is a usual characteristic. Certain cells also exhibit upward and downward cycles as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second while in other types of cells the actions can last for a long time. The electrical properties of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical characteristics. The most exuberant part of a neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body too can be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 millivolts. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome in the function of voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated ion channel in fact a collection of proteins that remain embedded in the plasma membrane. This produces an action potential in order to result in positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for controlling the level of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit is carried out at full force. The frequency and duration are determined by the biophysical properties associated with the voltage-gated ion channel. Several types of ion channels are known that produce positive feedback cycles and ultimately cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The most studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse conduction.
