The action potential is a process during which the membrane power of a cell first increases and then decreases. The transient shift in negative known as refractory period prevents back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells typically two varieties of these possibles are known for example, one is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells exhibit an electric field between their external and internal environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority of cells, minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed to occur but in some cells this is a regular feature. Certain cells can also exhibit periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage fluctuates. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up action potential cycle is complete in less than the thousandth of a second. However, in other types of cells , cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to an electric charge that is known as membrane potential. For the neurons, dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of an individual neuron is the hillock, but the axon and the cell body also get excited. In the axon hillock, the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is 55 MV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential exceeds an upper limit.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels found within the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a group of proteins that are embedded in plasma membranes and generates actions potential due to the fact that it could cause the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for managing the state of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle goes on at full-speed. The duration and intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are known that produce positive feedback mechanisms and cause the creation of these potentials. They are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials similar to nerve impulses. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found by muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channel that participate in faster nerve impulse communication.
