Action potential is an occurrence in which the potential of the membrane in a cell is first increased then decreases. This is a characteristic trait of a variety of animal cells , namely muscle cells, neural cells, and the endocrine cells. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play the most important role in cell-tocell communications. In beta cells of pancreas action potential is associated with hormone release. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated channels for producing action potential. The channels are closed whenever the membrane's potential remains within what is the limit of the cell , but If the membrane's current potential rises it becomes active. The channels that are active permit an inward flow sodium ions. This can increase cell membrane power. The rapid inward flow sodium ions can alter the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they become inactive. After this, potassium channels get activated , and they are able to flow outward of the potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns to its original state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory duration prevents the reverse traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials can be known for example, one which is produced due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience an electric field between their environment and their inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority of cells, few voltage fluctuations are believed to be present, however in some cells this can be a normal feature. Some cells also show variations in the voltage, as the voltage changes. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up process of action possible are accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second, whereas in other types of cells the processes can last several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain an electric charge that is called membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites as well as the cell body have various electrical properties. Most excitable portion of neuron is the axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body also become excited. The synaptic inputs to the neurons cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Membrane potential is responsible for managing the state of ion channels. The action potential is created during the time that the feedback cycle continues at its fullest. The time and the intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. Many kinds of ionchannels have been discovered that cause positive feedback processes that create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced in muscle cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels participating in faster nerve impulse conduction.
