As the channels become open, they permit the inward flow of sodium ions, which increase their membrane voltage. The rapid inward flow sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and in turn, they turn off. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and it is a flow of the potassium ions due to which the membrane returns to its resting condition. A transient negative shift referred to as the refractory phase prevents the return travelling of the action potential. In animal cells generally , two kinds of these potentials can be identified, for instance, one is generated from voltage-gated potassium channels, the other occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep an electrical difference between their internal and external environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority of cells, no voltage fluctuations are known to occur , however in certain cells this is a regular feature. Some cells show oscillations between up and down when the voltage rises and falls. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down action potential cycle is executed in less then a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, the cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical property of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized . They maintain the voltage differential called membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most active part of neuron is the Axon hillock. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body are also excited. The axon hillock's maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold is 55 MV. The synaptic inputs to the neurons result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane's potential exceeds an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a cluster of proteins which remain within the plasma membrane. They produce an action potential since it could generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that goes on at full-speed. The time and the intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Ion channels of various types exist that can generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the creation of more powerful impulses like nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscle cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
