A transient negative shift known as refractory period prevents back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells generally , two kinds of these voltages are well-known, such as one of which is created from voltage-gated potassium channels, and one that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have an electrical difference between their internal and external environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority of cells no voltage fluctuations are known to happen, but in a few cells this is an expected feature. Some cells exhibit fluctuations in voltage as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the up and down action potential cycle is executed in less then a thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, these cycles may take several seconds. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. For neurons, axons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical characteristics. One of the most exciting parts of neuron is the Axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is 55 mV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels located in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion canal is in fact a collection consisting of proteins that stay in plasma membranes and generates action potential because it can trigger the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for controlling the condition of Ion channels. Action potential is generated as the feedback loop is carried out at full force. The time and the intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. There are a variety of ion channel types that have been identified which generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials that mimic those of nerve impulses. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscle cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels which are involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
