An action potential occurs where the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases then decreases. It is the characteristic property of a number of animal cells including muscles, neurons, and cell types that are endocrine. Plant cells can also produce them. Neurons play a crucial part in cell-to cell communication. In beta cells of pancreas action potentials are associated with an insulin release. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for producing action potential. The channels remain closed as long as the potential of the membrane is near the resting potential of cells, however when the membrane potential rises it becomes active. As the channels become open, they allow the flow of sodium ions, which boosts the cell's membrane potency. The swift inward flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they disappear. After that potassium channels become activated , and you can see an outward movement of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns back to its normal state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory periods prevents back travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these are known for example, one is generated from voltage-gated potassium channels and the second that is generated by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells show in a voltage differential between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority of cells, small voltage fluctuations are reported to occur however in some cells this may be a common feature. Some cells show upward and downward cycles as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of action potential are completed in less that a thousandth of a second. In other cell types, the actions can last for a long time. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep the same voltage, also called membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The area that is most excitable in neuron is the Axon hillock but axon and cell body too are excited. In the axon hillock, the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 mgV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. It is produced when enough depolarization builds up until the membrane's potential exceeds an upper limit.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels which are located within the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a group of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It generates motion potential because it can result in a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop occurs at full strength. The time and the intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Different types of ion channels are recognized that create positive feedback processes that lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the generation of larger potentials similar to nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels which are involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
