Action potential is an event in which the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases before decreasing. It is a signature characteristic of a variety of animal cells namely, muscles cells, neurons and the endocrine cell. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play the most important role in cell-tocell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, the action potential is associated with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated channels for producing action potential. The channels remain closed when the membrane potential is near it's resting value of cells, however when the membrane potential rises it opens the channels. When they are opened, they permit an inward flow sodium ions, which increase that membrane's capacity. The rapid inward flow sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and , as a consequence, they are inactive. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and that is followed by an outward flow of the potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns back to its normal state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory time prevents the back moving of the action-potential. In the animal cell, generally two types of potentials are in existence, one which is triggered through voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience an electrical difference between their internal and external environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, small voltage fluctuations are reported to occur however in some cells this is a typical characteristic. Some cells show oscillations between up and down when the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages vary over a wide range. In brain cells the down and up action potential cycle is performed in less than a thousandth of a second, whereas in different types of cells, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical ability of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to the same voltage, also known as membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of one's neuron's axon hillock however axons and the cell body also become excited. At the axon , the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold is at -55 MV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization happens and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome by the action of voltage-gated channels in the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a cluster of proteins that are embedded inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce the action potential, which can give rise to a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for monitoring the status of Ion channels. Action potential is generated during the time that the feedback cycle occurs at full strength. Its duration and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Many types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately cause the creation of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium Ion channels.The most rigorously researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
