Action potential refers to an event that causes the membrane potential of a cell increases but then decreases. It is a characteristic feature of many cell types in animals, such as muscle cells, neurons, and endocrin cells. Plant cells can also produce them. Neurons play an important part in cell-to cell communication. in pancreas beta cell action potentials are linked with that release of insulin. Plasma membranes comprise a particular kind of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for producing action potential. The channels are closed at times when membrane potential is close to it's resting value of the cell but when the membrane's voltage increases then the channels are activated. The channels that are active allow for an inward flow sodium ions, which increase the membrane potential. The fast inward flow of sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity which causes them to stop functioning. The potassium channels then become activated and the flow outward of the potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns to its resting state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory period blocks back motion of the potential. In animal cells , typically two types of these potentials are acknowledged, one is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep the voltage of the outside and inside. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70mV. Most cells have no voltage fluctuations are known to occur but in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit an up-and-down cycle as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up action potential cycle is completed in less that a thousandth of a second. In other types of cells the actions can last for a long time. The electrical capacity of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized . They maintain an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical characteristics. The area that is most excitable in neuron is the Axon hillock but axon and cell body can also be excited. At the axon hillock the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is 55 MV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane potential is at a threshold value.

The action potential results of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels found within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins , which are encased in the plasma membrane. This produces movement potential because it is able to generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for maintaining the state of the ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit goes on at full-speed. Its duration and amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. A variety of Ion Channels are recognized that create positive feedback and produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in generation of faster potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced by muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in faster nerve impulse conduction.
