Action potential is a phenomenon in which the membrane voltage for a specific cell initially increases but then decreases. It is a typical characteristic that is present in a wide variety of animal cells , namely muscle cells, neural cells, and cell types that are endocrine. Plant cells also produce these. Neurons play a very crucial role in cell-to-cell communication. In beta cells of pancreas action potentials are associated with that release of insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of voltage-gated ion channel for creating action potential. These channels are shut when the membrane potential is near the potential at rest of the cell but when the membrane's voltage increases it becomes active. When the channels open they allow an inward flow of sodium ions. This in turn increases cell membrane power. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and as a result they are inactive. After that potassium channels become activated , and the flow outward potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned to its original state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory time prevents the back travel of the action potential. In animal cells typically two types of these potentials exist, identified, for instance, one due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep a voltage difference between their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. The majority of cells show minor voltage fluctuations are observed to occur but in some cells this may be a common feature. Certain cells also exhibit periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage goes up and down. The duration of these voltages are variable across a variety of. Synaptic inputs into the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane potential crosses the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome that voltage-gated ion channels which are located within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a cluster of proteins that remains embedded in plasma membranes and generates the action potential, which can result in a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for control of the activity of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle proceeds with full intensity. The time and the intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback loops and eventually cause the creation of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the generation of stronger potentials , similar to those that result from nerve impulses. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found by muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to faster nerve impulse conduction.
