In animal cells , two types of potentials are identified, for instance, one that is caused due to voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is generated by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain the same voltage between their outside and indoor environment. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. For the vast majority of cells, low voltage variations are thought to occur , however in certain cells, this is a common feature. Some cells show fluctuations in voltage as the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the up and down action potential cycle is accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, the processes can last several seconds. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the creation of fast possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made by muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels.The most rigorously researched voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels that are involved in faster nerve impulse conduction.
