In most cells, there is the same voltage between the outside and inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. In the majority cells, low voltage variations are thought for their existence, but in some cells this is a usual characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit up and down cycles as the voltage goes up and down. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down cycle of action potential are executed in less then a thousandth of a second. In other cells, these sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain the voltage differential called membrane potential. In case of cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical characteristics. Most excitable portion of a neuron is the axon hillock but axon and cell body are also excited. At the axon hillock the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold voltage is -55 MV. Neuronal synaptic interactions induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potential is created when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane potential crosses the threshold.

The action potential results of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels that reside in the plasma membranes of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is actually a group consisting of proteins that stay within the plasma membrane. They produce an action potential since it could generate positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for controlling the state of ion channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that gets full power. The duration as well as the magnitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage.
