In animal cells typically two kinds of these potentials can be identified, for instance, one that is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show the same voltage between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority of cells small voltage fluctuations are reported to be present, however in some cells this is a typical feature. Certain cells can also exhibit variations in the voltage, as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in less that a thousandth of a second while in other cell types, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical property of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most stimulated part of neuron is the axon hillock, however the axon as well as the cell body can also be stimulated.
