It is the characteristic property that is present in a wide variety of animal cells , including muscles cells, nerve cells, and the endocrine cell. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important function in cell-to-cell communication. Beta cells of the pancreas action potential is connected with the release of insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of voltage-gated ion channel for producing action potential. These channels remain closed while the membrane's current potential near it's resting value of the cell . However, should the membrane potential increase then the channels will become active. The channels that are active permit the inward flow of sodium ions which increases their membrane voltage. The swift inward flow of sodium ions affects the polarity of the membrane and in turn, they stop functioning. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and there is an outward flow of the potassium ions . The result is that the membrane returns back to its normal state. A transient negative shift , also known as refractory period prevents back travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these potentials are well-known, such as one that is caused through voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain in a voltage differential between their external and internal environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. Most cells have tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to occur but in some cells this is a typical characteristic. Some cells show fluctuations in voltage as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up motion potential cycle are executed in less then a thousandth of a second, whereas in other types of cells , cycles could take several seconds. The electrical characteristic of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized since they have an electric charge that is called membrane potential. In case of the neurons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in neuron is the axon hillock. However, axons and cells body are also excited. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70mV and the threshold potential is -55 mgV. Synaptic messages to the brain result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization develops until the membrane current reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome in the function of voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion canal is in fact a collection of proteins , which are encased in the plasma membrane. It produces an action potential since it could result in a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for controlling the level of these channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit runs at full speed. The frequency and duration are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Numerous types of ion-channels are known to produce positive feedback circuits that ultimately create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in generation of faster potentials , similar to those that result from nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made in the muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium-ion channels that contribute to greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
