In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials are well-known, such as one is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep the same voltage between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In majority of cells very few voltage fluctuations are believed to be present, however in some cells this is a regular feature. Some cells show upward and downward cycles as the voltage changes. The duration of these potentials vary across a range of. In brain cells, the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in less than thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. Action potential is the outcome by the action of voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membranes of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is actually a group of proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane. It produces movement potential because it is able to produce a positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for control of the activity of these channels. The action potential is created when the feedback cycle runs at full speed. The time and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Many types of ion channels are recognized that create positive feedback mechanisms and result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved with the creation of higher potentials like those of nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced in the muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most rigorously researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
