In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials are described, for instance, one which is produced through voltage-gated sodium channels, and one that occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain an electric field between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70mV. For the vast majority of cells, few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur , however in certain cells this can be a normal characteristic. Some cells also display variations in the voltage, as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the down and up motion potential cycle are executed in less then a thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized as they maintain an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons as well as the cell body have various electrical properties.
