The transient negative change known as refractory time prevents the back motion of the potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these potentials can be understood, one by the voltage-gated calcium channels and the second that is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells exhibit some degree of voltage variation between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In majority of cells very few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur , however in certain cells this is a regular feature. Some cells also display an up-and-down cycle as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells, the up and down cycles of action potentials are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second. However, in other types of cells the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical property of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized and maintain an electric charge that is known as membrane potential. In case of neuronal cells, axons and the cell body possess different electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in an individual neuron is the hillock, however, axons as well as cells body can also be stimulated. The axon hillock's remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold is at -55 mV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane voltage reaches the threshold.

They are involved in the generation of stronger potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. They are slower than those that occur by muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels participating in faster nerve impulse communication.
