Action potential refers to an event in which the membrane voltage of a cell increases before decreasing. In brain cells the down and up phase of an action potential are completed in less than thousandth of a second. However, in other types of cells the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized as they maintain the same voltage, also called membrane potential. For neurons, axons, dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical properties. The most stimulated part of an individual neuron is the hillock however axons and the cell body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold is 55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization happens and the membrane potential crosses an upper limit.

An ion channel that is voltage-gated is in fact a collection of proteins that remains embedded in the plasma and produce action potential as it may cause an positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for managing the state of these channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle goes on at full-speed. The time and the intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are identified that generate positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved with the creation of higher potentials that mimic those of nerve impulses. They are slower than those that occur by muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channel that participate in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
