The rapid flow inward of sodium ions causes a change in the membrane's polarity and as a result they disappear. Following this, potassium channels become activated , and they are able to flow outward potassium ions . In the process, the membrane returns to its resting condition. The transient shift in negative known as refractory periods prevents back movement of the action potential. In the animal cell, generally two types of these potentials exist, in existence, one of which is created due to voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells keep in a voltage differential between their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. In the majority of cells small voltage fluctuations are reported for their existence, but in some cells, this is a common characteristic. Some cells exhibit the cycle of up and down as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up cycles of action potentials are completed in less than thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, these cycles could take several seconds. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized . They maintain a voltage variation called membrane potential. For cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical characteristics. The most stimulated part of neurons is the axon hillock however axons and the cell body are also excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mV. The synaptic inputs to the neurons cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization builds up until that membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the result from the voltage-gated channels located in the plasma membrane of a cell. Ion channels that are voltage-gated are in fact a collection consisting of proteins that stay in plasma membranes and generates an action potential in order to produce an positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the state of these channels. Action potential is generated as the feedback loop continues at its fullest. The duration and the amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channel voltage-gated. There are a variety of ion channel types that have been discovered that cause positive feedback loops and eventually produce these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made by muscle cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in faster nerve impulse communication.
