Plasma membranes have a specific type of voltage-gated channels for creating action potential. These channels are shut as long as the potential of the membrane is close to the resting potential of the cell . However If the membrane's current potential rises the channels then they open. When the channels are inactive, they allow an inward flow sodium ions that boost its membrane potential. The fast inward flow of sodium ions alters the membrane's polarity and as a result they turn off. After this, potassium channels get activated and then there's an outward flowing of potassium ions due to which the membrane returns to its normal state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory time prevents the back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , usually two types of these potentials exist, described, for instance, one which is produced due to voltage-gated sodium channels and another one that results from voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show the same voltage between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority cells, low voltage variations are thought to occur however in some cells, this is a common feature. Certain cells may also exhibit an up-and-down cycle as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of action potential are executed in less then a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, actions can last for a long time. The electrical power of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential crosses an upper limit.

Ion channels that are voltage-gated are in fact a collection of proteins that are embedded in plasma membrane and produces motion potential because it can give rise to an positive feedback loop.
