After that potassium channels become activated , and there is an outward flow of the sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane returns in its normal state. A transient negative shift known as refractory period blocks back travel of the action potential. In the cells of animals, generally two kinds of these voltages are described, for instance, one is generated from voltage-gated potassium channels, the other is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is an electrical difference between their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV).
