The transient negative change known as refractory interval prevents further forward motion of an action potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these voltages are known for example, one which is produced due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Most cells have an electrical difference between their environment and their inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70mV. For the vast majority of cells, small voltage fluctuations are reported as occurring, however in certain cells this can be a normal feature. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization builds up until the membrane potential exceeds an upper limit.

The action potential results on the activities of voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is in fact a collection of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It generates motion potential because it can cause positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for setting the parameters of ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop continues at its fullest. The frequency and duration are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. Different types of ion channels are recognized that create positive feedback cycles and ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the generation of higher-frequency impulses like nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in muscles cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channel that participate in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
