In the following, potassium channels become activated , and then there's an outward flowing sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane is returned to its resting state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory period prevents back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , two types of these potentials are well-known, such as one is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.
