A process called an action potential happens that causes the membrane potential of a cell increases and then decreases. In animal cells typically two varieties of these possibles are well-known, such as one is generated via voltage-gated channels and the other which can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience the voltage of their interior and exterior environment. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. Most cells have low voltage variations are thought to happen, but in a few cells, this is a common feature. Certain cells can also exhibit an up-and-down cycle as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells, the up and down process of action possible are completed in less that a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, the processes can last several seconds. Action potential is created when enough depolarization builds up until the membrane potential crosses the threshold.

The action potential results that voltage-gated ion channels that reside in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a group consisting of proteins that stay in the plasma membrane. This produces movement potential because it is able to cause a positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for controlling the level of these channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle continues at its fullest. The time and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Many types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback and cause the creation of these potentials. They are involved in the production of high-speed potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made in muscle cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
