The rapid flow inward of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity which causes them to become inactive. The potassium channels, after which, become activated , and they are able to flow outward of sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane returns back to its original position. The transient shift in negative known as refractory interval prevents further travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials are well-known, such as one due to the voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is generated by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane voltage reaches an upper limit.

The action potential results in the function of voltage-gated channels found within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a cluster of proteins , which are encased in the plasma membrane. This produces actions potential due to the fact that it could cause the positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for controlling the state of these channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback circuit occurs at full strength. Its duration and amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ionchannels. A variety of Ion Channels are known to produce positive feedback cycles , which eventually create these potentials. They are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium-ion channels that contribute to faster nerve impulse conduction.
