A process called an action potential happens in which the membrane voltage of a living cell first increases and then decreases. This is a characteristic trait and characteristic of a lot of cell types in animals, such as muscle cells, neuron cells, and the endocrine cell. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important role in cell-tocell communications. In beta cells of pancreas the action potential is associated with it being released by insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of ion channels that are voltage-gated for creating action potential. The channels remain closed at times when membrane potential is near it's resting value of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential increases then the channels open. When the channels become active, they let inward flow sodium ions. This increases that membrane's capacity. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions changes the membrane's polarity and consequently they become inactive. Following this, potassium channels become activated and you can see an outward movement of the potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned to its neutral state. A transient negative shift referred to as the refractory phase prevents the return movement of the action potential. In animal cells generally , two kinds of these potentials can be in existence, one which is produced by voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Most cells have some degree of voltage variation between their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. In majority of cells very small voltage fluctuations are reported to happen, but in a few cells this can be a normal feature. Cells can show variations in the voltage, as the voltage changes. The time between these potentials differ across a broad range. In brain cells the up and down motion potential cycle are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second while in other cells, these cycles can take up to a few seconds. The electrical capacity of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain a voltage variation called membrane potential. In case of neurons, , dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical properties. Most excitable portion of neurons is the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body too are excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold potential is -55 mV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels found within the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is in fact a collection of proteins , which are encased in the plasma membrane. It generates the action potential, which can trigger a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for monitoring the status of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit proceeds with full intensity. The time and the intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Many types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback cycles , which eventually produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the generation of larger impulses like nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in the muscle cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated channel are sodium ion networks that play an important role in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
