An ion channel that is voltage-gated is actually a group of proteins that remains embedded in the plasma and produce motion potential because it can result in positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for controlling the state of these channels. Action potential is generated by the positive feedback cycle that runs at full speed. The time and amplitude of the action are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Different types of ion channels are identified that generate positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in generation of faster potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in muscle cells are mediated by the calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium channels, which play a role in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
