As a result, the membrane is returned to its resting state. The transient negative change known as the refractory phase prevents the return running of the action kinetic. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials can be known for example, one that is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells show the same voltage between their outside and indoor environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. Most cells have tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to be present, however in some cells this is a usual characteristic. Some cells exhibit fluctuations in voltage as the voltage changes. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells, the up and down phase of an action potential are accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second while in other cells, the cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized as they maintain a voltage difference called membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of neuron is the Axon hillock. However, axons and cells body too can be stimulated. In the axon hillock, the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold voltage is 55 mV. Neuronal synaptic interactions result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to rise or decrease. It is produced when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane current reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels in the plasma membrane of a cell. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is in fact a collection of proteins that remain embedded in plasma membranes and generates action potential because it can create an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for controlling the level of Ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop goes on at full-speed. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. There are a variety of ion channel types that are known to produce positive feedback cycles and ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the generation of stronger impulses like nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced in muscles cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
