In most cells, there is an electrical difference between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, little voltage fluctuations are known to occur however in some cells, this is a standard feature. Certain cells may also exhibit upward and downward cycles as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. Action potential is produced when sufficient depolarization takes place and the membrane current reaches the threshold.

A voltage-gated , ion channel is in fact a collection of proteins , which are encased within the plasma membrane. They produce an action potential since it could trigger the positive feedback loop. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ion channels. Numerous types of ion-channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. They are involved with the creation of higher potentials like those of nerve impulses. Lesser ones, such as those created in muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels which are involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
