Nearly all cells show a voltage difference between the outside and inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70mV. For the vast majority of cells, minor voltage fluctuations are observed to be present, however in some cells, this is a standard characteristic. The action potential results in the function of voltage-gated channels within the plasma membrane of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is in fact a collection made of proteins. They remain in plasma membranes and generates action potential as it may generate an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for control of the activity of these channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit goes on at full-speed. The frequency and duration are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. Ion channels of various types have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles that eventually result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved with the creation of higher impulses like nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced in the muscle cells are mediated by calcium ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in faster nerve impulse communication.
