Action potential refers to an event that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell first increases before decreasing. It is the characteristic property of a number of animal cells , namely muscle cells, neural cells, and the endocrine cells. Plant cells can also produce them. Neurons play a vital role in cell-tocell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potentials are connected to an insulin release. Plasma membranes have a specific type of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for creating action potential. These channels remain closed when the membrane potential is within the resting potential of the cell . However If the membrane's current potential rises then the channels become active. If the channels are open, they let inward flow sodium ions which increases that membrane's capacity. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and , as a consequence, they stop functioning. Following this, potassium channels become activated and inward flows of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns back to its normal state. A transient negative shift known as refractory periods prevents back moving of the action-potential. In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these voltages are well-known, such as one of which is via voltage-gated channels and the other which is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is the same voltage between the outside and inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. Most cells have low voltage variations are thought to take place, but in certain cells, this is a standard feature. Some cells show an up-and-down cycle as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is completed in less that a thousandth of a second, whereas in different types of cells, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain a voltage variation known as membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons and cell body have different electrical characteristics. One of the most exciting parts of an individual neuron is the hillock, but the axon and the cell body too can be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold is -55 MV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization develops until the membrane potential is at the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome in the function of voltage-gated channels that are found in the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is in fact a collection composed of proteins that remain inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce actions potential due to the fact that it could be the cause of the positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the level of ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop is carried out at full force. The duration and intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback cycles and ultimately produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the generation of stronger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. The slower ones, like those generated in muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
