Action potential refers to an event where the potential for the membrane of a cell increases then decreases. It is a common characteristic for a range of animal cells , namely neurons, muscle cells and the endocrine cell. Plant cells can also produce them. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions result in changing the polarity of the membrane and they stop functioning. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory is a way to stop back movement of the action potential. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.
