Action potential refers to an event that occurs when the membrane potential of a particular cell increases then decreases. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions changes the polarity of the membrane and , in the process, cease to function. The potassium channels then become activated , and then there's an outward flowing of the potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns to its original state. A transient , negative shift known as refractory period blocks back travel of the action potential. In animal cells generally , two kinds of these potentials can be identified, for instance, one of which is created by the voltage-gated calcium channels and another one that is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is in a voltage differential between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. The majority of cells show little voltage fluctuations are known to occur however in some cells this is a typical feature. Membrane current is responsible controlling the level of these channels. Action potential is generated whenever the positive feedback is carried out at full force. The frequency and duration are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. There are a variety of ion channel types that have been discovered that cause positive feedback cycles that eventually result in the production of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the production of high-speed potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in the muscles cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
