A process called an action potential happens in which the membrane potential of a living cell first increases before decreasing. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory periods prevents back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , two varieties of these possibles are described, for instance, one is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells keep a voltage difference between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In majority of cells very low voltage variations are thought to be present, however in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Cells can show the cycle of up and down as the voltage decreases and increases. The time between these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells, the up and down cycles of action potentials are completed in less than thousandth of a second while in other types of cells , intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain an electric voltage which is called membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The most excitable part of a neuron is the axon hillock. However, axons and cells body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mgV. Synaptic connections to the nerve result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. It is produced when enough depolarization happens and the membrane current reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels found within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a group of proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane. It produces movement potential because it is able to trigger a positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible maintaining the state of the these channels. Action potential is generated in the event that the positive feedback process proceeds with full intensity.
