The rapid inward flow sodium ions changes the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they stop functioning. The potassium channels after that are activated , and there is an outward flow of the sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane returns to its normal state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory interval prevents further moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials can be known for example, one that is caused because of voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain the difference in voltage known as membrane potential. In case of neurons, dendrites, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical characteristics. The most exuberant part of an individual neuron is the hillock, but the axon and the cell body can also be excited. The axon hillock's resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 MV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to rise or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization develops until the membrane current reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome in the function of voltage-gated channels found within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion canal is in fact a collection consisting of proteins that stay in the plasma membrane. It produces an action potential in order to be the cause of the positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for monitoring the status of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle occurs at full strength. The time and amplitude of the action are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. There are a variety of ion channel types that are known to produce positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. They are involved in the creation of fast potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels which are involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
