Synaptic signals to the neuron cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels present in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a cluster consisting of proteins that stay in plasma membranes and generates movement potential because it is able to generate positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for managing the state of ion channels. Action potential is generated by the positive feedback cycle that is carried out at full force. The frequency and duration are dependent on the bio-physical properties associated with the voltage-gated ion channel. Several types of ion channels are known that produce positive feedback cycles , which eventually create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium Ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
