An action potential occurs during which the membrane power of a living cell first increases then decreases. It is a characteristic feature of many cell types in animals, such as muscle cells, neural cells, and endocrinological cells. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a crucial part in cell-to cell communication. In the beta pancreas cells action potentials are connected to that release of insulin. Plasma membranes have a specific type in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for creating action potential. These channels are shut even when their membrane potential is within what is the limit of the cell but if the membrane potential increases then the channels will become active. When the channels are inactive, they permit an inward flow sodium ions, which boosts the potential of membranes. The rapid inward flow sodium ions causes a change in the membrane's polarity and they turn off. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and then there's an outward flowing of potassium ions . The result is that the membrane is returned to its neutral state. The transient negative change known as refractory time prevents the back travelling of the action potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these are described, for instance, one is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show a voltage difference between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In majority of cells very no voltage fluctuations are known to take place, but in certain cells this may be a common characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit an up-and-down cycle as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages can vary widely. In brain cells the down and up process of action possible are executed in less then a thousandth of a second. However, in other types of cells the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized because they keep a voltage variation known as membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons as well as the cell body have various electrical properties. The most active part of neurons is the axon hillock however axons and the cell body too can be stimulated. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold potential is at -55 mV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization develops until the membrane potential is at the threshold.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a group made of proteins. They remain within the plasma membrane. They produce action potential because it can result in positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for controlling the level of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle gets full power. The time and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are known that produce positive feedback processes that produce these potentials. They are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
