An action potential occurs in which the membrane potential of a cell initially increases and then decreases. It is a characteristic property for a range of animal cells , namely muscle cells, neurons, and endocrine cells. Plant cells also produce them. Neurons play an essential function in cell-to-cell communication. in pancreas beta cell actions potential is associated with that release of insulin. Plasma membrane has a particular type of voltage-gated Ion channels creating action potential. The channels are closed when the membrane potential is near the resting potential of the cell but If the membrane's current potential rises it becomes active. Once the channels are open, they allow the flow of sodium ions. This in turn increases its membrane potential. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity which causes them to disappear. The potassium channels then become activated and you can see an outward movement of potassium ions . The result is that the membrane is returned to its neutral state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory interval prevents further running of the action kinetic. In animal cells typically two types of potentials are acknowledged, one because of voltage-gated sodium channels, and one that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show an electrical difference between their external and internal environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. The majority of cells show few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur , however in certain cells this is an expected feature. Certain cells also exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these voltages are variable across a variety of. In brain cells, the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in less than thousandth of a second while in other cells, the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical capacity of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to a voltage variation known as membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons and the cell body all have different electrical characteristics. One of the most exciting parts of a neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body also become excited. At the axon hillock the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is at -55 MV. Neuronal synaptic interactions induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to rise or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization builds up until that membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome in the function of voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel actually a group composed of proteins that remain inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce an action potential in order to trigger a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for managing the state of these channels. Action potential is generated whenever the positive feedback runs at full speed. The time and amplitude of the action are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Ion channels of various types have been discovered that cause positive feedback cycles and ultimately produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels. The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated channel are sodium channels, which play a role in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
