Action potential refers to an event during which the membrane power that a cell has first increases before decreasing. It is a common characteristic of a variety of animal cells namely, muscles cells, nerve cells, and endocrine cells. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play a significant role in cell-tocell communications. The beta cells of the pancreas the action potential is associated with an insulin release. Plasma membranes feature a unique type of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. These channels remain closed even when their membrane potential is within that of cells, however when the membrane's potential is increased the channels then they open. When the channels are inactive, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions which increases that membrane's capacity. The swift inward flow of sodium ions causes a change in the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they turn off. Following this, potassium channels become activated and it is a flow sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane is returned back to its normal state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory is a way to stop back motion of the potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these voltages are described, for instance, one which is triggered via voltage-gated channels, the other occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is in a voltage differential between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. The majority of cells show no voltage fluctuations are known to happen, but in a few cells this is a typical feature. Cells can show periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage changes. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are performed in less than a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, these cycles could take several seconds. The electrical properties of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep an electric voltage which is known as membrane potential. In case of the neurons, dendrites and the cell body possess different electrical properties. The most excitable part of an individual neuron is the hillock however axons and the cell body can also be excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 MV. Synaptic connections to the nerve result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potential is created when enough depolarization happens and the membrane potential exceeds an upper limit.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels located in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is in fact a collection of proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane. It generates an action potential in order to cause a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the state of these channels. The action potential is created during the time that the feedback cycle occurs at full strength. The duration and intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. Ion channels of various types have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles that eventually result in the production of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated by muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse conduction.
