It is an event that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell initially increases before decreasing. It is a typical characteristic of several animal cells , including muscle cells, neurons, and the endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an important role in cell-tocell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potentials are associated with the release of insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of voltage-gated channels for producing action potential. These channels remain closed when the membrane potential is close to what is the limit of the cell but when the membrane's potential increases and the channels begin to open, they become active. When they are opened, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions, which increase the potential of membranes. The rapid flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the polarity of the membrane which causes them to become inactive. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and the flow outward of potassium ions , causing the membrane returns to its resting condition. A transient negative shift , also known as the refractory phase prevents the return traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these voltages are described, for instance, one of which is via voltage-gated channels, and another that is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have a voltage difference between their environment and their inside. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority cells, low voltage variations are thought to occur but in some cells this is a typical characteristic. Some cells also display oscillations between up and down when the voltage fluctuates. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down cycle of action potential are completed in less that a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, cycles could take several seconds. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, , dendrites and cells' bodies possess distinct electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in a neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body are also excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is at -55 MV. Synaptic signals to the neuron cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. It is produced when enough depolarization develops until the membrane's potential exceeds the threshold.

Action potential is the result of activity of voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster made of proteins. They remain in the plasma membrane. This produces action potential because it can produce positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for monitoring the status of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle occurs at full strength. The time and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Numerous types of ion-channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback processes that create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials that mimic those of nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated in the muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium channels, which play a role in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
